National Organizations and their Headquarters – Indian Polity Notes

National Organizations are the organizations which hold significance at the National Level. Not only is it important from an exam perspective, it is also important for anyone to know where a National Organization is located. 

The following is the list of National Organizations, along with their Headquarters.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

  • Founded on 1st April 1935
  • Headquarters in Mumbai
  • It is India’s central bank and regulatory body responsible for regulation of the Indian banking system.
  • It is under the ownership of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
  • It is responsible for the control, issue and maintaining supply of the Indian rupee.

National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD)

  • National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is an apex regulatory body for overall regulation of regional rural banks and apex cooperative banks in India.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai.
  • It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
  • Entrusted with matters concerning economic activities in rural India, along with developing and implementing financial inclusion.

NITI Aayog

  • The NITI Aayog full form is National Institution for Transforming India) serves as the apex public policy think tank of the Government of India.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The nodal agency is tasked with catalyzing economic development, and fostering cooperative federalism
  • Cooperative Federalism is done through the involvement of State Governments of India in the economic policy-making process using a bottom-up approach.

National Housing Bank (NHB)

  • National Housing Bank (NHB), is the apex regulatory body for overall regulation and licensing of housing finance companies in India. 
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance , Government of India.
  • It was set up on 9 July 1988 under the National Housing Bank Act, 1987.
  • NHB is the apex financial institution for housing.

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI)

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is a regulatory body under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India and is tasked with regulating and licensing the insurance and reinsurance industries in India.
  • Headquarters in Hyderabad.
  • It was constituted by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act, 1999, an Act of Parliament passed by the Government of India.
  • The agency’s headquarters are in Hyderabad, Telangana, where it moved from Delhi in 2001.

Pension Fund Regulatory & Development Authority (PFRDA)

  • Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority is the regulatory body under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Finance, Government of India for overall supervision and regulation of pension in India.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • PFRDA regulates NPS, subscribed by employees of Govt. of India, State Governments and by employees of private institutions/organizations & unorganized sectors.
  • The PFRDA is ensuring the orderly growth and development of the pension market.

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is the regulatory body for securities and commodity markets in India under the ownership of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai
  • It was established on 12 April 1988 as an executive body and was given statutory powers on 30 January 1992 through the SEBI Act, 1992.

Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC)

  • The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is a statutory film-certification body in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai
  • It is tasked with regulating the public exhibition of films under the provisions of the Cinematograph Act 1952.
  • Cinematograph Act 1952 outlines a strict certification process for commercial films shown in public venues.
  • Films screened in cinemas and on television may only be publicly exhibited in India after certification by the board and edited.

Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI)

  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) is the apex regulatory body for overall licensing and regulation of micro, small and medium enterprise finance companies in India.
  • Headquarters in Lucknow.
  • It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
  • Its purpose is to provide refinance facilities to banks and financial institutions and engage in term lending and working capital finance to industries, and serves as the principal financial institution in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. 

Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC)

  • Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) is an apex-level body constituted by the government of India.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The idea to create such a super regulatory body was first mooted by the Raghuram Rajan Committee in 2008.
  • An apex-level FSDC is not a statutory body.

ASSOCHAM

  • The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) is a non-governmental trade association and advocacy group based in New Delhi, India.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The organization represents the interests of trade and commerce in India, and acts as an interface between issues and initiatives.
  • The goal of this organization is to promote both domestic and international trade, and reduce trade barriers while fostering a conducive environment for the growth of trade and industry of India.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)

  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is a regulatory body set up by the Government of India under section 3 of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • It is the regulator of the telecommunications sector in India.
  • It consists of a Chairperson and not more than two full-time members and not more than two part-time members.
  • The TRAI Act was amended by an ordinance, effective from 24 January 2000, establishing a Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) to take over the adjudicatory and disputes functions from TRAI.

Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI)

  • The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) is a voluntary self-regulatory organization of the advertising industry in India.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai
  • Established in 1985, ASCI is registered as a non-profit company under section 25 of the Company Act.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India under Department of Consumer affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India.
  • Headquarters in Old Delhi.
  • It is established by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 which came into effect on 12 October 2017.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the governing body for cricket in India.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai
  • The BCCI is an autonomous organization and does not fall under the purview of the National Sports Federation of India.
  • As such, it does not receive any grants or funding from the Ministry of Sports.

Federation of Indian Export Organization (FIEO)

  • Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) is the apex trade promotion organization in India set up by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, and the private trade and industry segment in 1965.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The organization is responsible for representing and assisting Indian entrepreneurs and exporters in foreign markets.

Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT)

  • Established in 1982, MAIT is the apex industry body representing the Electronic H/W sector in India.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • A not-for-profit body, MAIT closely works with policy makers of Central and State Government to enable the growth of the Electronic System H/W Design & Manufacturing sector in India.
  • MAIT’s members include Large & MSME Companies and Industries from the domain of OEM’s, ODM’s, EMS, Design Houses, Recyclers, PRO’s, Testing Laboratories, and Sub-sectoral Associations.

Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA)

  • Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) is a not for profit organization, registered under section 8 of Companies act, 2013, committed to the growth and development of stainless steel industry in India.
  • Headquarters in Gurugram.
  • Founded in 1989 by leading stainless steel producers, it was formed with the explicit objective of diversifying the applications of stainless steel in India and increasing usage volumes in the country.

Project Exports Promotion Council of India (PEPC)

  • Project Exports Promotion Council of India (PEPC) is an export promotion council set up by the Government of India in 1984 (as Overseas Construction Council of India).
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • PEPC in line with the Foreign Trade Policy of the Government (of India) not only undertakes the necessary export promotion initiatives but also provides necessary technical information, guidance and support to Indian Civil and Engineering (EPC) construction including process engineering contractors and consultants – in public or private sector – to set up overseas projects in any of the following modules of engineering service.

Telecom Equipment Manufacturer Association of India (TEMA)

  • TEMA – Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association of India is India’s first and oldest association in the Indian Telecom Sector.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • Established in 1990 (1989-Genesis of TEMA Birth). 
  • TEMA has always advocated and stressed the need for strengthening the domestic manufacturing of telecom equipment in India so as not only to become self reliant but also export. 
  • Working closely with the Government on growth and indigenization of the Electronics/Telecom Sector, TEMA is the first one in bringing focus on the associated security risks due to continuous dependence on imported network equipment and components for the telecom networks in India.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)

  • Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India.
  • FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.

Engineering Export Promotional

  • EEPC India is the trade and investment promotion organization for the engineering sector sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • Set up in 1955, EEPC India now has a membership base of over 12,000 out of whom 60% are SMEs.
  • As an advisory body it actively contributes to the policies of the Government of India and acts as an interface between the engineering industry and the Government.

Organization of Plastic Processors of India (OPPI)

  • The Organization of Plastics Processors of India (OPPI) was established in 1984 to promote healthy growth of the plastics processing industry in India in the overall interests of the processors, consumers and society at large.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai.

National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM)

  • NASSCOM is the premier trade body and chamber of commerce of the Tech industry in India and comprises over 3000 member companies including both Indian and multinational organizations that have a presence in India.
  • Headquarters in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Our membership spans across the entire spectrum of the industry from start ups to multinationals and from products to services, Global Service Centers to Engineering firms.
  • Guided by India’s vision to become a leading digital economy globally, NASSCOM focuses on accelerating the pace of transformation of the industry to emerge as the preferred enablers for global digital transformation. 

Association of Mutual Funds (AMFI)

  • The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) is the regulatory body for the mutual funds sector in India.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai
  • It is a division of the Securities and Exchange Board of India, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
  • It was formed in 1995.
  • Most mutual funds firms in India are its members.
  • The organization aims to develop the mutual funds market in India, by improving ethical and professional standards.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)

  • Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (d/b/a BSNL) is a central public sector undertaking.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • It is under the ownership of the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India.
  • It was incorporated on 1 October 2000 by the Government of India.

Bharat Petroleum

  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is an Indian central public sector undertaking under the ownership of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai.
  • It operates three refineries in Bina, Kochi and Mumbai.
  • BPCL is India’s second-largest government-owned downstream oil corporation, whose operations are overseen by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Central Board of Direct Taxes

  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes is a statutory authority functioning under the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The officials of the Board in their ex-officio capacity also function as a Division of the Ministry dealing with matters relating to levy and collection of direct taxes.
  • The Central Board of Revenue as the apex body of the Department, charged with the administration of taxes, came into existence as a result of the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1924.

State Bank of India

  • State Bank of India (SBI) is an Indian multinational public sector bank and financial services statutory body headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai
  • Established on 1 July 1955; 67 years ago

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation

  • Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) is a center-state joint venture that operates the Delhi Metro.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. was created on 3 May 1995 with E. Sreedharan serving as the first managing director.

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce (FICCI)

  • Established in 1927, FICCI is the largest and oldest apex business organization in India.
  • Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • Its history is closely interwoven with India’s struggle for independence, its industrialization, and its emergence as one of the most rapidly growing global economies.
  • A non-government, not-for-profit organization, FICCI is the voice of India’s business and industry. From influencing policy to encouraging debate, engaging with policy makers and civil society, FICCI articulates the views and concerns of industry. 

Confederation of Indian Industry

  • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is a non-governmental trade association and advocacy group.
  • Headquartered in New Delhi, India
  • Founded in 1895.
  • CII engages business, political, academic, and other leaders of society to shape global, regional, and industry agendas. It is a membership-based organization.

Export-Import Bank of India

  • EXIM Bank or Export-Import Bank of India is India’s leading export financing institute that engages in integrating foreign trade and investment with the country’s economic growth.
  • Headquarters in Mumbai.
  • Founded in 1982 by the Government of India, EXIM Bank is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Indian Government. 

National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC)

  • NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, is an Indian central public sector undertaking under the ownership of the Ministry of Power, Government of India which is engaged in generation of electricity and allied activities.
  • Headquarters of the PSU in New Delhi.
  • NTPC’s core function is the generation and distribution of electricity to State Electricity Boards in India.
  • The body also undertakes consultancy and turnkey project contracts that involve engineering, project management, construction management, and operation and management of power plants.

Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is the World’s second largest professional accounting body and largest professional accounting body of India under the ownership of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India.
  •  Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • It was established on 1 July 1949 as a statutory body under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 enacted by the Parliament for promotion, development and regulation of the profession of Chartered Accountancy in India.

Life Insurance Corporation (LIC)

  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is an Indian statutory body
  • Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
  • It is under the ownership of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
  • The Life insurance Corporation of India was established on 1 September 1956, when the Parliament of India passed the Life Insurance of India Act that nationalized the insurance industry in India.
